District 9
written at Monday, August 17, 2009

By far one of the better science fiction movies I have seen in a long while. It is disappointing to see many science fiction movies compromise various things on either side. You can have a movie which is very impressive with their visual effects, spending hundreds of millions with the director assuming that the general audience have an IQ of a goldfish. Or you can watch a movie which has some substance but it simply gets boring after an hour or so.

The movie District 9 is impressive on all levels, made only with a slim budget of $50 millions (In contrast to the $200 million blockbuster Transformers 2 which wasn't that good). It really does show us that with that kind of money, you can still make films the audience will definitely enjoy.

An extraterrestrial race were forced to live in slum-like conditions on Earth for about 30 years after first contact with the humans. In summary, the humans treated them really badly and as usual our race tried to take hold of the alien biotechnology and weaponary but to no avail. A lot of political references to this movie, I will leave you guys guessing. I give it an 8/10! Anyway I shall not blog anymore about this as I have to continue studying for that commercial law test coming up and work on that microeconomics essay rawr.
