Not A Boomerang Blessing
written at Monday, August 3, 2009
To start off, I would like to give a brief illustration. A young girl had a 20 cent and 1 dollar coin, she was at a church service. The offering bags were passed around, she had a choice between the 20 cent and 1 dollar coin. She told herself, "Mmm I could put in 1 dollar into the offering bag..." Her mum asked her, "My dear, which would you feel better putting into the bag?" She replied, "The 20 cent one of course." She then dropped the 20 cent coin into the bag and smiles :)
Kids say the darnest things? I don't think so! Good on her! She understands what cheerful giving is! After hearing of that illustration, I was kind of wondering, how much did I give feeling a sense of regret in my heart? On many occasions I believe!
If you throw a Boomerang (a good one that is) it is supposed to come back to you. I've never tried it myself although I have 2 Boomerangs sitting in my room, I think it was purchased in Australia? If I tried to throw a Boomerang it'll probably hit me in the face and I'll end up with a bleeding nose!
The message at church yesterday was a very fitting one, God's blessing isn't a boomerang blessing. When we give, what are we expecting? Should we be expecting anything? At times, we unknowingly or knowingly, give and we share with the people around us expecting something in return. When we give, whether it be material or not, there is a ripple effect. God works through the things we give and share everyday! How could there be a change in the world, how can people know of God's work in their lives if what we give keeps "Boomeranging" back to us? From time to time I also fail to grasp and remember the ultimate blessing that God has given to us freely, His son Jesus.
The fact that we already have the means to give and be a blessing to others, isn't that already a blessing in itself?

What matters supremely, therefore, is not
in the last analysis, the fact that I know God,
but the larger fact which underlies it --
the fact that He knows me.
