Proto-Typical
written at Wednesday, November 4, 2009

Let's look at the proto-typical high school student, probably very smart, very learned, sporty, musical, the works. Every morning that student will take the bus to high school, slog away with the studies, head back home to complete the homework and study even more, not to mention several tuition sessions in a week. Besides tuition, it's extra curricular activities and sport on the weekend, or some sort of music (ABRSM piano or violin) or dance related activity (Ballet or Modern Dance). Reaching home at the end of the day on the start of the weekend, once again hitting the books and slogging away. And at the end of the week, he/she comes back home, drained, tired, weary, burdened. By then, this is time he/she will head off to church to get "recharged" for the upcoming week, like some kind of battery.

Soon, it becomes a habit, it becomes a routine, it seems "normal" to have such a busy schedule. You might feel uneasy, you might feel uncomfortable on a free day, you might start to get a bit restless on your seat, while you are lying down on your comfortable sofa or having dinner with friends but you can't help but have a bugging thought at the back of your mind, "Man I really could be doing something more productive right now..." After all, you are superman/wonder woman right?

After a major exam which you have spent months preparing for, you get your marks back. Goodness me, they are decent, they shine above the rest. But on the back of your mind, you ain't doing it for yourself, you're not satisfied because you know your parents won't be. You head back home, disclose your results to the mother. She then rips your heart to shreds and starts screaming at you, giving loud imperatives and you will then give a temporarily reassuring reply such as, "Yes, I'll do better next time." She then brings down the ultimatum before you, in which failure to comply will result in another one of those disastrous consequences. Just another one of those days, as usual.

In such a competitive environment, you think every man is for himself, or every woman is for herself. Struggling to be at the top of the food chain. Eat or be eaten. Your behavior starts to get aggressive at the workplace, although you might not know it, family time is compromised and yes the cycle goes on, rinse and repeat until the day you die.

You are a sparkling, illustrious and shining star with an amazing one-of-a-kind Curriculum Vitae/Resume and getting paid a filthy amount of cash. But you get disappointed because you're still trapped in the office working over time, with absolutely no time to spend for yourself, for your family, for anything else and for God.

So you recite the pledge in primary school and suddenly it all becomes meaningless to you, "So as achieve happiness, prosperity and progress for our Nation." Sure thing, you have prosperity, sure thing, Nation is probably doing very well indeed! But are you happy?

Look at that description above, grin to yourself and ask yourself this honest question. Isn't there more to life than merely this?
